Outline
Contemporary Relevance
· Karen Horney’s Neo Freudian Theory and Feminist psychology theories are still seen to hold significant importance in contemporary personality psychology because theirs is an account that was premised on socio rather than psychobiological causes. This is in line with the trends in personality development theories that seek the cue from environmental and cultural factors.
· Some of the most popular current theories consider the social context to be the primary factor influencing various personality characteristics and actions. For example, a meta-analysis conducted by Naragon-Gainey and Watson (2018) looks into social cognitive risk factors involved in internalizing disorders thereby providing evidence to Horney and her idea of personality being influenced by sociocultural environment.
· Second, basic anxiety and neurotic needs as described by Horney are even more applicable to the present time providing a strong foundation for the address of anxiety disorders and problematic behavior ways to cope with it.
· In today’s therapy approaches, such notions are employed to help the clients understand that they are suffering from neurotic needs, and thus, having anxious reactions will be more appropriate.
· For instance, to investigate the mechanisms, that underlie the basic anxiety, as well as neurotic needs that stem from it, therapists may address the client’s early relations and the current social setting. Thus, with an appreciation of these open questions, therapy aims at the modification of pathological modes of functioning in an attempt to identify more satisfying patterns of behavior.
· Moreover Horney’s theories have to some extent enriched the information about personality disorders mainly about the interaction between the individual and the social factors. The roller of this perspective is based on a wider approach in which not only intrapsychic processes define issues concerning the subject, but other extra-psychic issues, as well as these subjects, are defined by social and cultural frames of reference.
Real-World Problems or Phenomenon
· According to Horney’s theories this is best described by the phenomenon of moving toward anxiety, or the tendency to strive for workplace anxiety. The basic anxiety is most probable experienced by employees working in stressful organizations, considering the fact that they are under lots of pressure with little or no support.
· It can hence manifest in several neurotic demands; for example, the need for reassurance or the weakness of avoiding failure.
· In the perspective of such postulates of anomie, as it was opened by Horney, this issue would be regarded as developing due to the interactions of the given subject with other people and the sociophysical environment.
· For instance, one may lack self-confidence because of the strict parents or teachers one was brought up with and this makes one to be overly dependent on compliments.
· Modern research proved this application, proving that academics could master this type of application to get the results they desire. The studies that have been concerned with occupational anxiety have negated that anxiety with treatment oriented in the direction of social support and goal realism cuts this anxiety in half (Smith 2007).
· Horney’s biosocial theory is also deemed effective in coping with the pressure at the office as she emphasizes culture and society and it is properly laid down the need to bring structural changes to support the workers.
Summary
· In a similar way to what has just been described for the principal mechanisms, the interpretations of the concepts given by Horney have incorporated New Age thinking whilst being coherent with the assumed givens.
· Actually conceived to oppose Freud’s somewhat more biologically oriented theories, these theories move sociopolitical factors into the limelight, something which, sadly, has only been way more appraised by modern science.
· This shift focuses on the social and environmental things that usually influence personality and personality change thus expanding the field of personalities.
· It is obvious that compared to other workers in personality psychology Horney’s theories seem to be somewhat more embracing when it comes to the aspect of personality development.
· Horney’s current model, unlike Freud’s psychoanalytic theories, understandings involve unconscious motivation and factors such as genetic pre-dispositions that include aggressiveness, relationship with parents and other early figures, culture, and social contexts in which the client is bred.
· This integration complements today’s theoretic trends that consider human behavior as a function of complex phenomena hence acknowledging personality as a function of a cluster of factors.
· Therefore, the main strength of Horney’s theories is that this is made to be focused on social and cultural aspects that have a considerable influence on personality.
· Therefore, there is a very broad and heterogeneous mode of thinking as far as the nature of personality is concerned, and on this basis, the conception offered by Murray has relevance for modern psychology until the present time according to Fenichel (1995).
Future Relevance of the Theory
· As for the future rating of Horney’s theory, it is necessary to mention that it is relevant to the field of personality psychology as the given theory seems to be more suitable and reasonable in any circumstances of the modern world.
· The awareness of biology, psychology and sociology considerations and their applicability to each other along with an emphasis on sociocultural factors Horney stresses will be pertinent.
· The new movements in the psychosocial and cultural trends in psychological science which make it possible to computerize neurological, social and cultural factors into the analysis of personality also support the use of the theory of Horney.
· In the future, it is probable that certain general notions of her theory will still hold currency while at the same time, the details of the theory such as the neurotic needs theories will still be accorded special focus by theoreticians.
· The theoretical framework proposed by Horney may be considered a match for the modern theories and practices because the current practicing mental health professionals have started to argue about the sociological and environmental causes and consequent of personality disorders.
· All in all, it can be seen that the approach and the contribution made by the fractional Karen Horney for developing the theories of personality disorders under the canopy of Neo-Freudian as well as Feminist psychology is humble and deserves appreciation.
· Concerning the topic of discussion on social and cultural factors her theories provide richness and spread of personality that is relevant for a modern outlook on personality theories.
